Brake problems

I just changed the master cylinder and booster on a 75 F-250 crew cab. I put in used parts and they were working okay. I lent the truck to my neighbour and when it came back the brakes were terrible. Now the pedal goes down 85% of the way before the brakes engage. It is not spongy at all. I just drove it to work this morning and have not looked into it at all. Any ideas where to start.

I was hoping it would just be low on fluid as opposed to the cylinder or booster being shot.

Obviously I'd start checking fluid first. Sounds like there may be air in the system, try bleeding brakes, or rear brakes out of adjustment??

You do realise that stuff only breaks when:

1) It HAS to work.
2) Someone is watching (i.e. "Check this out")
3) You loan it to somebody.

I agree with ubereal. Bleed the whole system down. Check all the pistons at the wheels for wet spots.

You might not have tightened one of the flare fittings at the master cylinder enough, letting air in.

Booster could be shot. Check that the Vac line is still attached.

Usually if you have a bad booster, you're brake pedal is hard as a rock, with little braking power.

You're right with the lending things out. Most anything I lent out, came back on a hook. At my expense ofcourse...

When I checked the fluid, it was really low. Turns out one of the front cylinders was leaking causing the problem.
