Steering Question

Hi. I was driving my 88 F150 4x4, (300 6, 5 spd manual shift), down the highway the other day at about 50-55 and made a sudden lane change. It almost felt like the front was going out of control (best I can describe). The truck drives fine otherwise. I know it could be many things but was hoping maybe this may ring a bell to someone. Thanks.

If you mean a sudden front end vibration that goes away just as fast then you probably have worn suspension bushings or your steering linkage joints need grease or replacing.

the only bell it rings is you better find out what that is before you drive it anymore. with front end problems the only thing you can do is raise it up and start wiggleing and shaking things until you find something that has play and fix it. there should not be play in anything.

Welcome to FTE

you don't say how many miles or if the front end has ever been worked on but ball joints or wheel bearings would be my guess if it's original. Mine is at 160k and they are getting loose.
Jack the front wheels off the ground and put a bar or 2x4 under the wheel and pry straight up.....there should be no up and down movement in the suspension before the truck actually moves.

Wheel bearings or loose lugnuts on a wheel could cause shaking also. You would probly feel loose lugs or a bent rim all of the time....not just at certain speeds. Wheel bearings can be checked with the wheel jacked up also......hold the tire and try to move it in and out at the top and bottom. If it is loose....you can remove the dust cover, cotter pin and tighten it up sometimes. Usually best to replace them if they get bad enough to cause shaking.

Good Luck
