My '96 needs its every 5 year carpet cleaning. A combination of dog dandruff, grease from used auto parts, and spilled coffee and coke are settled in. I have a shopvac that will suck the chrome off a trailer hitch, but need a tip on what will loosen the dirt and stains first. Any recommendations welcome.
I used to work for Stanley Steemer...I have seen miracles worked on carpet that I would have thrown away. We cleaned auto/RV carpets also; I think we charged about $30.00 then...now, who knows? They can really get em clean, though; you might want to check and see what they would charge. The problem with the rental type machines, is that you can almost never get all of the detergent/cleaner out of the carpet. It looks like you got it, but it's there, and when it is dry, it sucks up dirt like a magnet, and your stain is back bigger than ever. Plus you can have them Lysol it if it's stinky, and Scotchgard to protect it. Their prices have gone way up since I was there, it might not be worth it now...Just my two cents...
I have never seen a stain that didn't come back from steam cleaning. The best way to take out grease is with a dry cleaner (it goes on as a foam so there is very little water). Dry cleaners for small crystals that absorb and attach themselves to oil compounds. Thy you simply vacuum them up. I replaced my carpet with a product called bedrug. It is a truck bed liner that looks and acts like carpet, but it is a non woven polyester fiber that is impervious to oil, dirt, solevents and all the usual abuses auto carpet may be normally exposed too. I only replaced the carpet in the back, since I use my van for work.
