It's a lot of work, not sure how much you would pick up in mpg. My thought is if you needed to replace the engine it could be worthwhile, just doing it for the heck of it, while a good project.....hmmmmm.

18 MPG and you're complaining? These old trucks are shaped like a brick. I wish my 2006 FI OHC pickup got that, and I drive like Uncle Fudd.

My 65 gets better than 18 MPG on the highway, but it's set up with a high screw and overdrive.

This swap will cost a bundle of $$$$, and be a PITA. And after spending all this hard earned green, you're still pushing that flat front end and near vertical windshield down the highway. Is it worth all the time and $$$$ for a 1-2 MPG gain?

I hate to discourage any project, but it isn't worth what you'll spend, and may take more than one summer to complete. What you'll spend in $$$, not to mention the labor, and all the headaches, will buy a lot of gasoline.
