Help! Help!! Help!!!

So I'm starting up my '60 this morning and I notice more smoke than normal on the start up. But I think it's just because I put in new oil yesterday. So I'm letting her warm up and everytime I step on the gas a little more smoke comes out. And it's black smoke too.

So after she comes to idle I start off. And everytime I get up to maybe 1500rpm she smokes more and more. But she runs fine still untill I get up to 30mph and she sputters A LOT. And with more smoke. And there is also this "whistling" sound coming when I get about 1500rpm. It almost sounds like I'm driving a semi truck.

Well I turned around after about 2 miles and got her home ok but I'm stressing out big time. I checked the oil and the water and she's fine there. Maybe a quart low on oil but still find.

Please someone Help Me PLEASE!!!

Black smoke = the engine is running rich = it's carb related. Could be a variety of things. Do you have a manual choke?

Yes, I have a manual choke. I first start it open and after it starts I put push it in to about a quarter of an inch in. I cannot put the choke all the way in because it will die.

I'm with Bill on this, I think you need to check the choke. With the black smoke and the whistling it sounds like the old girl is sucking for air.

Under normal conditions what happens when you push the choke all the way in? does it die because its not idling high enough? If so then you need to adjust your base idle. If the truck is dying because its runnign too lean then and idle mixture adjustment would help that some. If its just a low idle problem and you are using the choke to raise the idle it will cause the engine to run rich all the time.

FOUND THE PROBLEM!!!

Checked the choke and I had it to far out but also checked the air filter and it had a nest of spiders, one dead, and a ***** load of webs around it. Must have gotten in there overnight.

So since I took the day off I might as well adjust the carb. Any help would be appriciated. My only experiance is I rebuilt one with my dad when I was 16 with my old 69 VW Bug. So please be gentle with this 'ol girl ...

Woohooo!!

One time at a Cadillac dealership where I was working as a tech a car came in complaining of poor performance. I got the car up into my stall and popped the hood and removed the air cleaner cover. Squirrels had packed the entire area surrounding the air filter with dry dog food. The car ran much better when I cleared it all out.

Ok, does the truck idle smooth? but just to low to stay running? if so just adjust the idle set screw. Its the one that pushes directly on the throttle linkage.
If the idle is very rough and it needed some amount of choke to keep it running then I would say you probably need to richen up the idle mixture. The idle mixture screws are typically in the base plate of the carb, one for each bore of the car. A one barrel carb will have one idle mixture screw, a 2 barrel will have 2 screws, etc. You screw the screws in to cause a lean mixture, out to richen it up. You don't need to turn them very much at a time, maybe 1/4 turn or so.
Its always a delicate dance between the base idle speed and the idle mixture adjustments because the effect each other.

My hunch with your situation is that without the choke partially engaged your idle is way to low, I'd start with adjusting the base idle

Good luck, have fun with your truck today

May also have a split vaccuum line someplace (whistling noise) leaking vaccuum. A vaccuum leak can result in all the above symptoms. Make sure all lines are in good condition.
