Another quick question, I went out this morning to start my truck, and it was dead. It has new batterys, and voltage regulater i just installed sunday. could this be from the wait to start light coming on and going off, causing a draw from the batterys, or maybe a bad alternator? All the lights and radio works fine. I have not had time to get the alternator checked yet.

be sure and check the plug that goes in the alternator and make sure it's a good fit and clean connections. had same problem. new alternator and still same problem. got disgusted when found bad plug/connector in alternator. took spade type crimp on terminals and made a set of jumper wires to do away with connector. just gotta be sure and mark your wires so you know which one goes where if you have to unplug them. that fix only cost a little time and $1 worth of parts.

gotta ask. is it a 6.9 and roughly what's the horses? main question is how far is where you're at from north mississippi and how long would it take for you to build another one?

In the picture of the 86 glow plug controller, notice the yellow wire with the taped splice in it.

There used to be a plug in connector where the tape is.
The connector was melted and not making a good connection at all.
When the connector lost connection, the truck would not start.

I am about 40 miles from the Pennsylvania state line, so I am rather far north in WV.

Yes it is a 6.9 and I have no idea what the HP or torque numbers are, it runs good.

When I built that one, I had about 6 weeks in it between the machine shop and waiting on parts.
Once all the parts were here, it took a couple evenings and a weekend to put it all back together.

okay, that's a ways off, but still not too far to go for a good engine. now to convince wife that it's more important than new kitchen cabinets.

We got rained out yesterday at lunch, so we came home.
Right now we are working 4 13 hour days out of town, so I have a three day weekend every week.
Usually I am dead on Friday, but since we only worked 5 hours yesterday I came back to life sooner this week.

How long will it keep going on and off? Does it stop doing it when the engine gets good and warmed up?

If so, couldn't that just be the "afterglow" system working as it is supposed to Dave?

When mine was working the way it was supposed to this time of year the afterglow would come on maybe one time for a few seconds right after it started.

Now when it was below zero I would see after glow several times in the first quarter mile or so driving.

It would also come on when it was well below zero after an extended period of idling.

Once it starts going on and off, it does not quit till you turn truck off. now my new batterys are dead, dont know if this is from this problem, or the alternator. fixing to take the alternator off to get it checked.

The glow plugs suck about 200 amps when they are on.
If the glow plugs are on very much that would eat up more amps than the alternator can put out.

funny thing that happened to me now they dont work. Sent my wife, daughter, and my wifes sister all the way to michigan from florida to buy my truck on the way home they had a kid who worked at a part store check the trans fluid and he shorted the dipstick on the glow plug controller. I was called to try and figure out why the volt meter kept swinging, the lights where surging, and where's the ticking sound coming from. FOUND OUT IT WAS THE GLOW PLUGS CYCLING AND CYCLING AND CYCLING it wouldnt stop until the key was turned off. Now my glow plugs dont work.. i think they might be shorted out or the g/p cont. took a dump
