Stalling Out

I have an 1984 with a 302, 2 barrel carb. When I start the truck in the morning and let it warm up for about 5-7 minutes, it will run fine, but then stall out. And keeping stalling out when coming to stop. The RPM drop to below 500 and then it dies. Then after 15 minutes of driving it is fine. Is this just a Bronco problem or is it something that can be fixed.

Is it idling up real fast for that first 5 to 7 minutes? Check your choke pull-off to see if it is working properly. It's right on top of the carb. Take the top of the air cleaner off and look at where it is while its not running. When you start it up it should be pulled down all the way. You can pull the hose off it too, push it down with your finger, and hold a finger over the little pipe to see if it stays down without it running.

It's either one of 2 things: not enough fuel or spark.

1. Check for adequate fuel pressure. Easiest way to do that is buy a 3/8 universal fuel filter (clear) and put it right before the fuel pump. This way, you can "see" if there is enough fuel going to the engine once you start it. The fuel filter should be 3/4 filled with gas while the engine is running. Those mechanical pumps go bad. I actually disconnected mine & replaced it with an electrical fuel pump (4-7 PSI) mounted on the framerail. Aftermarket universal electric fuel pumps are available from JC Whitney or any auto parts store.

2. Make sure your carb is adjusted properly and your air filter is clean.
