PCM question

I have searched this forum for several different things and have been very successful and found vey good info.

I have read that there was changes in the PCM's on how the trans shifts in the 95 model year for the E4OD. Specifcally what gear lock up engages. I have a 95 w/4.9/e4od. I really don't like when lock up engages. It comes on in second gear, which makes the 2-3 shift a little rough. When it is not in lock up it the shift is very firm, but not jerky like it is when the lock up clutch is engageds. I thought that Ford changed the shift program to wait until 3rd to engage the TCC in 95. I have an early production 95 (10/94), so maybe they had not made the change.

Is there anyway to program the PCM for this or buy one off the shelf that has this program? The local parts store has multiple units listed for this application and needed the OEM#. Would this determine the program?

Thanks for any info you might have.

Go to products page & see if your current pcm is listed under the 95-96 F-series. It shows shift points & lock-up as being parameters that can be modded.

You might check with TCI trannies. They make some manual lock up controls for GM electronic trannies (under a $100) & might make something similar for E4s.

Then there is Bauman products & others who make stand alone controlers, but pricey.

Short of finding a ford powertrain engineer (here or else where) willing to let their brain to be picked, I can't think of a way to find the right PCM you're looking for.

Good luck & welcome to FTE.

Not really, but its easy to remove.

You have to remove a few of the screws around the plastic inner fender to pull it back a bit. Then there is a 10mm bolt holding the harness on the computer, unplug that. Then there are two nuts holding a plate that holds the computer, remove that. Then the computer can be pulled because the inner fender is able to be moved enough that the computer will side out of its socket.

You may be able to read the code on the computer label without pulling back the inner fender.
