SD to MAF Conversion - Write up?
#61
It's taking me some time to write this...
unfortunately college comes first and i've been bombarded with assignments til the end of april.
I'll be lucky if I can get it done by the end of this month.
I will try to answer specific questions if users are doing it,need the info, and are waiting for my article.

Yes they are pricy, much like the previous E4OD/Mass Air conversion were as well; PSP, Kenne Bell, Ford Racing and Pro-M/PMAS. I installed a Ford kit on mine and it took about 2 hours and I was able to drive my truck after that.
I'm not trying to take away from the article Justin is working on, something like that is definately needed for the folks looking to do a mass air swap with used/salvaged parts. That type of swap will definately save some money.

looks like this e40d thing is in demand, exnay on swapping the aod into my '92, put in the 89 low-mile 302 onto the '92's stock e4od, and still have the motorsport maf sitting on the shelf waiting to go in, so now i'm plagued with the e4od thing. i see the baumann getup advertised in the $400 range, but what all strings are attached? i've read a couple years ago of using the computer from an early powerstroked e40d and that sounds interesting.

I just realized after reading this entire thread that I really do love my MAF on my '95 I-6. This '95 is the first FI vehicle I've ever owned. I love carburetors, but I have to admit that with 240,000 miles my MAF still hasn't given me a whole lot of grief.
Regarding the system "aging" better, I'll testify to it!
The E40D is still kicking hard too- I just yanked a friends 2500 Chevy out of a hole the other day on a trail with 2WD and chains tied up!
Is that article posted yet?

anyone know if it'd be difficult to run the motorsport mass-air computer side by side with the original truck computer to run the e40d? i thought i read somewhere couple years back that there is a way to convert to mass-air using the mustang or motorsport computer to run the engine and still using the factory truck computer to run the e4od with everything else disconnected. but i don't remember where i saw it. sure wish'd i was a computer whiz and figure out how to do this, make up a harness and plug it all in. well it'd also be nice to win a million bucks too.

The FI conversion wasn't too bad. I swapped injector wires 5w3 and 7w4 to get it to squirt in the 154 order that my valvetrain is set up for and it does alright. Now I have no more MAP or ACT, now its MAF and IAT, seems a bit more responsive and torquey but I haven't gotten to drive much:
I've been stuck on this damn conversion forever!! The signals the pcm is getting for the tranny arent quite right. I got the engine part working but it shifts like crap.
I took all my donor parts from a SFI 94 and put it on my SD 92. Looking at haynes engine wiring diagrams the trans harness is the same for both e40d's EXCEPT on the 94 trans connector 3 wires have different pin numbers and one wire(#30, lt blu/yel) on it isn't on the 92 trans harness. I might be able to switch the 3 wires to the old pinout and get the right signals through the right wires but I dont know what the extra wire could be for.
I think I'm going to bite the bullet and throw down another 250 for a superlift truspeed speedo calibrator (lifted, gears...) for a 94 rather than the one i have for a 92 but I don't think thats gonna solve the issue.
I don't know what differences there are between a 92 and 94 e40d but thats been my major hang-up on this conversion and nobody seems knowledgeable enough to help.
