hey guys I just bought a 91 F350 for a really good price.. its got a nice flat bed and I'm going to turn it into my welding truck... the first thing I am battling is the cranking issues.... I have a new glow plug relay.. and new battery cables and I am getting good cranking power. the next thing I am looking at is this air sucking thing... I'm gonna read as many of the previous posts as I can but any advice would be helpful. also what glow plugs should I use? and where to get em? the next question is what engine oil to use and how many qts does this 7.3 hold? this thing runs great when its running... just hard to start. thanks
I think you'll find a general agreement in this forum that the Motorcraft Beru glow plugs are your best bet. Other brands like Autolite have a tendency to distort and they may break off when they're removed.
The 7.3 holds 10 quarts of oil. However, you can use a PowerStroke oil filter and that will add somewhere around an extra quart.
Sounds like your on the right track. Is the fuel return lines between the injectors painted gray. If they are there lies the air intrusion problem. What happens is small cracks in the rubber lines will let air in but no fuel out. letting the fuel to return towards the fuel tank. So you have to pump a lot of air before it will start.
Also check the steel lines on the frame for corrosion. rust will let air in also. I found a problem on mine under a hold down clip on the frame.
ok guys thanks for all the help.... well I think I have helped myself somewhat because my first problem was I had major corrosion going to my driver side battery.. I got that fixed and she turns over much quicker.. (as of right now) it didn't crank very easy but I had changed the fuel filter and had air in the lines... I let it run for about an hour to charge the batteries real good... I let it set for about 4 hours and it cranked up fine. so the true test will be in the morning. I will get to see it my batteries are holding a charge and if so I will then see if I really do have an air leak problem. I do plan on going ahead and replacing the fuel return lines on the injectors and the glow plugs.. anything else I should look into replacing to help my cranking issues?
tomorrow I'm going to the ford house.. maybe they'll have it in stock.. I'll get the hoses and o rings... should I get new caps to? I was running it today and it wasn't running good at all. the fuel filter light is on and it doesn't have much power. it is a new filter though. it will run real sluggish then at about 1500 rpm it will take off pretty good but, still runs rough. also... twice today it died on me when going down the road at speed then completely letting off for a stop. when I push in the clutch the rpms go down to 500 for a few seconds then dies... it took a couple minutes to start back up. also I noticed diesel around one of the caps on the injectors. so anyways I'll keep working on it... thanks
jake have you tried checking the fuel pressure at the schraider valve on the filter housing, you should have about 5 to 7 pounds of pressure. also try getting a new filter and filling it to the top with diesel kleen, start the truck and let it run it will smoke quite a bit but it will clear up. you can get diesel kleen at any auto part stores and wally wart. as for the caps if there still good and not cracked i would just change the orings, just make sure when you put the new orings on lube them with petrolium jelly before installing the caps are you could damage the orings on installation. good luck. jarrett
