welding

why is the polarity different when flux core welding compared to mig? I know this makes the current run the opposite direction, which means one way it moves from the part to the wire, and the other way from the wire to the part. Why is this significant? What would happen if you didn't switch the polarity? I am curious to try, but don't want to break anything. Anyone know the theory on why it is this way?

pretty sure I read somewhere that it has to do with where the heat builds up. But I might be way off base.
