4wd problem

4wd problem
Hey guys-
It doesn't look like my 4wd is engaging. The light engages, but I still get a ton of rear wheel spin when I accel. I tried manually locking the hubs, but that doesn't seem to help.
When I put it in neutral and switch to 4wd low, I do hear a thump like it's engaging, but stillnot a ton more traction. Grant it, I do need new tires, but I've had 4wd before, and it just doesn't feel like it helps much.
I saw on ford-trucks that there are relays, a motor, and a solenoid or something to check, but I can't access that forum from work for some reason.
Wondering what you guys suggest checking initially.
I did look in the manual, and it says the fuse that runs the 4wd crankcase is the same as the one that has the overhead console on it, and the OH console is working fine.
Any ideas on what to check?
