Plug Replacement

93 - 4.0 XLT super cab, 5 manual

I was going to change plugs and noticed that the left bank rear (passenger side), access looks too tight to get a wrench in there. Is there something special for this one, or am I mis-judging the space? Thanks

On my mother's '94 Explorer 4.0, I remember I had to take the right front tire off and come up through the wheelwell for one or two of the plugs.

(Even though when you're standing in front of the hood those plugs are on your left, that's considered the right side of the engine.)

If it's a rectangle shaped coil pack, then it's got EDIS, if it's a circular thing with the spark plug wires coming out the top, it doesn't. '93 should have EDIS.

john112deere has a good idea, taking the tire off makes it a little bit easier. I did all of them with all the tires on. A VERY short extension allowed me to take the rear-most passenger side one off without difficulty.

The big thing people forget when changing plugs is there are multiple ways...you odn't have to do it from the engine bay, you can do it from the wheelwell or from under the truck.

Yep, wheelwell is your access to that plug. Make sure you spray your plugs with liquid wrench and let them soak. I changed my plugs this week on my 92, and broke one, I was able to get it out with an easy out, but it wasn't easy. Not to mention the fact that if that wouldn't have worked I was lokking at puling the head.... I wasn't impressed. All is good now and it runs like a champ.
My 92 has the rectangular coilpack.

I just changed mine today, I went with Autolite Double Platinum. I also changed the plug wires, with the right tools i.e rachet extentions etc it made it super easy!
I have a 2000 Ranger 4.0L
