4X4 Possible Problem?

4X4 Possible Problem?

I've got a 2006 W14 XTR. Had a rear-ender (topic of another post). I've recently noticed two things:

1) When in 4x4 Hi, there seems to be some stress on the wheels in a hard turn, say, pulling into a driveway. The tires can even chirp going around the turn and as I give it gas it doesn't seem to operate smoothly. Is this a normal condition for 4x4? Maybe just the nature of 4x4 in a pickup?

2) Unrelated to #1, but on the passengers side where I didn't think there was damage, the rear wheel well seems to produce the smell of burning rubber. Its faint and I might be being too critical - happens intermitantly and I have yet to determine the exact conditions. Nothing appears to be rubbing or touching the exhaust. When they fixed the truck they checked the alignment.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

You use your 4WD on hard, dry pavement? Maybe you have full-time 4WD. Anyway, the front steering knuckles do that on 4x4s in tight turns. If you try that with part-time 4WD you get one end turning more than the other and something has to give.
The smell; maybe they got paint or undercoating on the exhaust pipe in the body shop?

I can help you out with the first question at least. In 4x4HI, there needs to be a little bit of slippage to occur so as not to get driveline binding. In 4x4HI, all four wheels spin at the same speed, but during a turn all four wheels need to turn at a different rate of speed.

Hope this helps,

You say you got rear-end damage from the accident, check where the exhaust pipe curves around your spare tire. n sure if you have an aftermarket exhaust, but even the stock setup comes really close.

4WD on dry pavement?

Do a search for "A4wd versus AWD versus 4wd" in the Expy Navi section, this may help clear up some of you questions about the drive line binding.
