I have an 84 Ford F250 with the 351 Windsor. I just put an edelbrock aluminum intake, edelbrock carb, and edelbrock cam. I started my truck up for the first time on sunday and raised the RPM up to 2000rpm just like the instructions say to. I broke in the cam, and near the end of the 30min the tach started droping from 2000 to 0 and back up. Well on monday I went to start my truck up again, the voltage regulator and the starter solenoid went up in smoke. literaly smoke. Well I got the new regulator and the solenoid today and installed them. Some of my things dont work. My lights, gauges, horn, brake lights all work. My cd deck, amp, tach, and my MSD control box (I think) doesnt work! The whole truck was hooked up on the + side of the solenoid. Everything in the truck has fuses and not one was blown! The things that dont work all have 12 volts. What could be the problem? Can puting the ground strap on the aluminum intake be the problem? And after the solenoid smoked the starter still kicked over. When I put the new one on it still kicked over but no starting. PLEASE HELP!
this model truck uses fusible links in addition to the fuses. the fusible links are located under the hood near the battery embedded in the harness. you have to ck for power on both sides of the fusible link. ill bet you have a blown fusible link. if you do, make sure you have no sghorts to ground on the wire that connects to the link. if not, replace the link and all should be ok
Thanks but I already fixed the problem. The ACC fuse fell out of the fuse box and the start solenoide and voltage regualtor were to blame. My truck didnt start because the ignition coil died so it kept shorting out to the truck.
