Diff Question
I was wondering if anyone knows what would cause a popping sound and binding in the rear diff area on my F 350 Dually. It only does it when I turn real sharp or back up and turn sharp. I had it check at a couple of differnent shops and they all said they can't find anything wrong. I just want to know if it is something to be worried about. Thanks

you didn't say what year your truck was but i figure you've got a slip yoke rear driveshaft. pull the slipyoke out and check the splines for wear, cause it sounds like your rearend is fine.sometimes the splines get a wear spot that kind of get stuck here and there and makes a noise like you describe. the driveshaft tube amplifies it and makes it sound louder than it is.if thats the problem the fix can be as simple as just greasing the splines up or replacing the slip yoke. if i'm wrong don't go crazy on me,it happened to a friend of mine but his was at the slip splines in the middle of a driveshaft so i figure the same could apply to your problem

If you have a limited-slip differential, it is the clutches binding and then slipping free. It's fairly common for this to happen in tight turns. Some shops add more of the friction modifier to help the clutches slip easier. Personally I'd rather hear the noise than cut down on the grip of the clutches.

Thanks alot, I wasn't sure if it something to worry about. I figured someone on here had some knowledge on the topic. Thanks again. Oh and by the way it is a 99 and has 114K on it.
