intermediate shaft

i have a 79 f-150 with the 302. how does the intermediate shaft running from the distributer to the oil pump seat? does the locking washer go at the dist. end or the pump end?

That push on washer/retainer prevents the oil pump driveshaft from pulling out of the oil pump when the ditributor is removed for service. The driveshaft is installed from the bottom and the oil pump holds it up against the casting where the distributor oil pump drive is. You want to leave a little clearance so the retainer doesn't rub the block.

i tried to put that shaft it from the bottom but its to long to go back in the oil pump. the stop is hitting the block before it can sit back down in the oil pump. is it alright to move that stop? other than that is there any other tips?

that washer is a one way deal, push it off the shaft and start at the bottom and push it back up but not so far as you can't get the shaft in, once the shaft is in push it back up leaving it 1/8 from hitting the block. Now when you remove the dizzy the one way washer thing holds the shft in the oil pump.
