Engine Light,newbee help

I just aquired an 2003 F-250 6.0l diesel. the engine light is on. are there some things I can do to find why it's on and how to reset, before I take it to a shop? Thanks in advance!!

To read the code for the check engine light you must have a code reader. Many of the after market programmers have the ability to read engine fault codes and will be able to reset the check engine light. There are also some computer programs you can hook up to a lap top to the OBD II port to do this too. If you have less then 100,000 on the truck it should be under warranty. You will probably have to pay the $100 deductible to have it serviced though. Sorry as far as I know there is no easy or cheap way to find out what the Check engine code is. Maybe someone else will jump in and help you out more.

dynarider has got it right. if you are out of the 100,000 miles then find someway to read the code and maybe we can help you out here. you might be able to stop by autozone to get the code read, but dont listen to them on anything else. those boys couldnt diagnose a skip much less a 6.0.

Be aware that some codes also store freeze frame data that assists in diagnostics. If you reset the light, that data is lost.
