Factory CD player problems
I have an '01 "X" and am having problems with the CD player not giving me my CDs back.. It happens whether I have one or six in the hole..I press Eject and it'll say something about press CD and then will tell me that there is no CD in the hole.. Sometimes it'll spit it out after doing this several times and sometimes after I press the load button,it'll give it back..Some other times It'll give it back on the first request ?????
How difficult is it to change the whole radio set out myself or should I just pay someone to do it for me???There are a lot of places that will do it for little or no money if the player is worth enuff money..I really don't need a 6 CD player as you can only play one at a time and the shuffle on mine doesn't always shuffle all of them,just two or three...I am spoiled as I changed over from a Suburban which has a better sound system (stock) as well as the cassette player (of which I still have a whole bunch) AND has the sound equalizer system that changes the quality as the car goes faster...It is very noticeable on the diesel..

Changing it out is quite simple. You'll need the radio removal tool. You can buy one or make one. I think there is a drawing/picture of one here in this forum if you do a search for it.
I'd change it out. Replacements (if you want to go stock) are quite plentiful and cheap on ebay.

For what it's worth..... be advised that every CD player FORD makes has brain farts when using the heater during cold weather. The CD player simply gets too hot.
The only exception to the above seems to be in a Crown Victoria I own. The CD player has a cooling fan built into the back of it.

Dump the player. I replaced my 6-CD in dash this weekend with little probelms . All I needed to do was do a little trimming on the top and bottom lips of the dash facia opening to make it fit snug.
This is the model I bought - a Pioneer FH-P4200MP , sat ready, cassette, CD, tuner,. It even makes sthe stock speakers sound better, A link:
