Random thoughts:
Pricing is going to vary with geography. So good here and good there aren't necessarily the same. For example, here, the 7.3's refuse to depreciate. Theres an 01 on a lot here with 200K on it and they want 29K for it, and will probably get it.
Buying new, research your area any way you can. Paper, internet, blue book, talking to people who have bought recently. At some point, you're paying for the overhead of the dealership. Completely fair. But it's retail, it's a widget market, and theres nothing wrong with shopping around to find the place that wants to give you a better deal on the exact same thing than their competitor. I don't have any problem with markup and profit.
I do get grumpy with what I perceive as overzealous salesmanship and profiteering. Big difference. If I know a place plays the four square game I dont even go there.
One thing to keep in mind is the markup on the super dutys isnt going to be as much as the 1/2 ton, so there's less room to move for the dealership.
If you get yourself a single net deal, I think you're scoreing. Thats the first tier of "true cost" to the dealer, which includes overhead items and carrying costs.
Another thing to look for is dealer vehicles of program vehicles. If they've had it on the lot for five months, and its been test driven 4000 miles, the discount they'll give you to take it off their hands is probably substantial.
Last thing is are you willing to travel?
I'll just share an example. I'm in Nebraska. I already said I think some of our pricing is high. But I have a friend who works at a dealership in Ohio. Now thats a good drive if I wanted to do that, but if, in the hypothetical, he could get me the same thing I wanted for 5K less, is it worth a long weekend of driving for 5K? Um, yes.
The adage of not what you know but who you know . . . that can go a long way towards removing hours of pointless banter.
If you don't know anyone, then decide ahead of time, based on your research, what you want, and your top end. Make it black and white for them. This is what I want, here's what I'll pay for it. I don't want to haggle, barter, dicker, or really even talk about it. Its a yes or no question. If you can sell it for that, I'll be by Monday at 9am to sign the paperwork and pick it up. If not, politely walk. Some dealerships will guffaw at it. Some will say here's your keys. It only takes on who is willing to not waste their own time and just get a sale.
If you let them set the terms, they will. If you set your own terms, you might have to work a little to find a place that will respond to that, but you'll be happier at the end of the day.

and everyone on FTE "knows" at least one honest dealer. Contact our member Polarbear for an honest deal (and he'll even help if he can't sell you one!). A great asset to our FTE community, and after just going through the process of ordering and buying a truck through him, it was not only the best deal I found, but also the best new car buying experience I've ever had, period. (and I have bought a LOT of vehicles in my time...). I can't endorse him enough (or is it that obvious?!)

Good luck to you!

Hey RAGSTEXAS,
What are you looking for and what part of The Great State do you reside? I am just north of Amarillo, maybe I can help.

I bought mine new in july of 06 and I got it for $31,780 out the door. With no trade. I got $9500 in rebates and 4.9% interest from Ford.
