Question Possible fuel pump problem

I have a 99 Exp. Yesterday it started to make a low whistle or hum from the center to the rear underneath somewhere. It comes and goes, and sometimes continues after I turn the key off for about 15 seconds. It is at idle or running. I don't care about the noise but I am taking my daughter back to college tomorrow and don't want to break down. Does anybody have any ideas?

I don't know if it is related or not but my ABS light is on sometimes.

Thanks for any help.

Trike, You might want to try activating the fuel pump from the service port with the engine off to better listen if it is a fuel pump noise. I'm not to familiar with your OBDII service plug on connection to the fuel pump but I'm sure you could get it from a repair manual. You might also want to check your fuel pump pressure to see if it's within specs. I had a mustang pump that showed a low reading several weeks before it died.

Sounds like a leak in the EVAP system. Letting pressure leak off from the tank. The fuel pump stops when you turn the key off so it would quit and not make noise for 15sec.

Thanks for the replies. I took a chance and drove my daughter back to college with it. It never made a noise. The only thing different was the temperature, probably 15 degrees warmer outside, and it was full of fuel. I am going to try and check it out today.

Thanks for asking.
Not yet. I am still trying to figure it out. I took it to a shop to put it on the computer. The ABS light was not on at the time. The computer said no codes. I drove it for a while with no noise. Then the light came back on. Then the noise started again. I don't know if they are related. I have poor hearing so I have trouble with where it is coming from. I asked two friends to listen, and they each said something different. It definately will make noise after the key is off and in my hand. It is a short time but it is there. So I am a little stumped. It does not seem to affect driving. Only a noise. Does this have a speed sensor in the rear like my truck. That may be the reason for the ABS light. My truck had the light go on and I changed the sensor.

It has one in the rear differential.
I am still suspecting a pressure leak in the EVAP system. Get the code read and post the code here and it may head us in the right direction.

LxMan1, I went to 2 different AZs for a code read and both said pass. I borrowed one from a mechanic (an Actron) and did it myself. It said pass too. But the ABS light comes on about 50% of the time. There should be a code of some kind.

It seems like the noise is only when the tank is low. When I fill it up the noise goes away.

Since the ABS light is on and off should I change the sensor?

The regular code readers do not read the ABS. I'm not exactly sure how to get the codes on ABS. Does the light ever flash so that you can count the flashes?

No the light does not flash. It is either on or off. The speedo is fine and the OD light does not flash either. And the trans shifts ok too.

On my truck when the ABS light came on, the trans started to shift strange and the speedo went nuts.

What is involved with the EVAP system?

There is a blck box on the frame above the tank with some stuff in it, then it runs to the front of the truck and under the hood, but I've never followed it from there. There is usually a hose near the firewall that will have a tag on it with a green cap. I believe that this is a test port for the EVAP system.
It basically keeps the tank pressurized and keeps fumes from reaching the outside. It could be bleeding off after you shut down the truck and that's what you here.

Maybe the low fuel level causes something. I will start looking for the box on the frame. Also I'm going to change the ABS sensor. I don't think they are related, but since the light is going on there must be some problem. Thanks for the help. I will post back with what I find.
