Exclamation Stalling Issues

Hey I got a '01 X 7.3L diesel and I've run into a problem with it. While I'm driving out of no where it just quits, RPM's go to 0 without hesitation and everything turns off. I can start it back up right away (most of the time) but it quits again after a very short distance. I just ran into this situation so it hasn't been a problem ever. It just started. My dad thinks its the cam sensor, but those are so stupidly expensive and I don't want to buy it unless I know that's the problem. I also don't want to hook it up to a computer because that's also expensive to take it in. Any X owners run into this problem as well? and if so, what was your solution?

ebay $50-80 you will need one someday anyway. changing it out takes about 15 min. mine would stall as I was stopping when rpms dropped, dead motor no brakes no steering note if you want you can buy a obd11 reader for about $40. from harbor freight tools that will tell you if it is indeed the cam position sensor but that is what it sounds like
