4x4 Question

I think i might have an issue with my hubs. On my 99' Tahoe I can spin the front axle freely when the 4x4 is not engaged. They are auto locking hubs. Now, shouldn't I be able to do that on the Excursion if I have the hubs in Auto?

The quick way to chk is to see if you can turn the axle stubs(u-joints) behind the knuckle by hand.If they won't turn then you have a problem. you don't have to raise the vehicle to chk.

Is that where I should check? In the past i've just tried to turn the front axle leaving the transfer case. Does ford do it differently where the axle is engaged up to the front differential?
If they do not spin freely is that a sign of the hubs going bad or could it be something else?

On our Ford ESOF systems, the hubs should be disconnected at the wheels when the system is in 2wd and the hubs are in auto. You should be able to both spin the front driveshaft and spin the front axles (turn the u-joints). If it doesn't allow this, the hubs are probably stuck engaged. This is very common with the POS Ford ESOF system.

How do I fix that? Is this something to be overly concerned about? I've got a big long 3000 mile road trip next week and I don't want any surprises.
thanks
