Engine Cleaning
Am new to positng on the forum. Have always look here for good advice. I have a 2001 f250 7.3 PSD. Was curious if there were a way to clean the engine safetly. The area around the turbo is getting really dirty but I dont't want to damage anything. Any help would be nice

Degreaser and a pressure washer. Blow it all off with compressed air after.
Get out the matches guys (I know there'll be flames coming from those that disagree). I say go for it, especially with a PSD. I do it at least once a year with my gasser and that has more things to worry about getting wet.

I use a degreaser and a pressure washer also. I am also aware that ther about a thousand things that I could damage under the hood. Give the degreaser a little time to work on a dry and warm engine, rinse thouroughly with as little pressure as is necessary. Don't saturate electrical components and use the spray wand from everya angle possible, side, top, bottom, in front of, behind etc. A warm engine will also dry itself off sooner. Don't be in a hurry to crank it back up. Water will not damage most electrical components unless they are energized while wet. Compressed air is a big help also. Remember to use your degreaser according to instructions. Too strong can damage some plastic, rubber, metal. or painted components.

Simple green or castrol superclean. I like the simple green better cause the super clean leaves a white residue. I do it with the engine warm (but not operating temp) and rinse with a regular hose.

bterry, you rinse your V10 down? Do you cover up the COP's? My engine bay is real dirty but I'm deathly afraid of screwing something up so I just wipe what I can by hand w/ a damp rag.

Metalman, yes I do - I don't cover the cops. Maybe I'm lucky, but I've never had a problem. I do get it warm first and blow it all off with compressed air after. To be honest though I'm not sure how much good blowing it off does, because water will get in where air wont. Also, I never do it in the winter. It's alot easier (and better IMO) if you don't let the engines get too bad in the first place. bodabdan offers some good detailed advise.

Thanks, guys, I have thought about doing it that way but just have been really cautious because as I said , I am just unsure of the ramifications that might take place. I will try the simple green first ( have use it before and been very pleased with the results).
