Increase Performance

I just picked up a 67' F250, and I think its a 352. It feels a bit sluggish, but once I get going speed and performance picks up. What would be the best thing to do to increase performance "off the line"? I have a budget of about $1,200. I'm pretty sure I already have a four-barrel carb on there, and I just had a nice 2 and a 1/2" double barrel exhaust system installed. Should I upgrade to an Edelbrock carb and maybe a new fuel-intake manifold?

Thanks

Matthew, A good tuneup including a Pertronix points replacement, carb rebuildkit might be a good place to start. Problem is, the mpg on the 250 is strained enough as is, getting more launch is only gonna make it worse. IMHO

If the engine is still strong and doesn't need a rebuild, then I would look into changing out my rearend gears...put in a set with a lower (higher number) ratio. A four barrel carb is not necessarily needed for "off the line" performance inasmuch as the secondaries are there to keep the motor from starving out at higher rpm's. You don't mention transmission type, but if it is an auto, then a higher stall torque converter might be an option too.

For your F-250, I would recommend a cam kit, Edlebrock Performer RPM intake with a 600cfm 4V, Headers, Dual 2.5" exhaust and Petronix system those guys are talking about. The cam should be for torque and fuel economy improvement as well as better throttle response in the low rpm range. An estimated guess to performance increase- about 50-75+hp, 75-90ft/lbs and about 2-5 MPG. Don't automatically assume that you will be getting this performance. This is only a guestimation. From what you described, it sounds like you have the same set up like I have on my '67 F-250 (352). I have a 352 2V with a 4-speed (NP-435), and 4.10 gears in a Dana 60. If you would like more info on your truck, go to google.com and type in '67 F-SERIES REGISTRY and you should find a whole site devoted to '67 F-series trucks. They have an online code book in which you can use your door tag to decode your specs on your truck. I hope I helped you some.

I agree with the cam, intake, carb, electronic and exhaust upgrades. I don't know how it fits into your budget, but these are good places to start. The intake and carb are probably the quickest, timewise, improvement.(and the most bang for your buck, in my opion) If your adventureous enough, I'd say tackle the cam and exhaust next, since you'll most likely have to pull the engine. Follow up by upgrading the ignition.
