Question 223 Engine Question

Been lurking for a while, but have a question I can't answer by reading past posts. I have a '64 F100 with a 223 six cylinder. It had been sitting for two years before I purchased it, but was able to get it running with relatively little effort. Went to start it a week or so ago and heard a distinct metal slapping metal sound. Truck fired up, but was obviously missing one or more cylinders. I think it has jumped time, as indicated by position of rotor at TDC. Ran a compression test before replacing chain and have good pressure on all cylinders except #4. It has zero. Question - Is this an interference engine and the valve(s) in number 4 are bent or is it possible that the timing out of phase could be causing the loss of compression? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pull the access panel off the side of the engine. Push rods will be right in front of you. Turn the engine by hand and see what is going on. Just my thoughts. could have several things that may have happened.

Or, put #4 at it's tdc and blow air in the spark plug hole and see where it comes out. If the pressure is zero, it should be easy to tell.

Unlikely that only one cyl would be affected if it were the cam timing gear.

"as I slap myself in the head" excellent place to start.

Thanks, guys...

Replaced timing gear set if for no other reason than as a maintenance item. Easy job and relatively cheap. Haven't finished buttoning her up yet, but plan on running another compression test tomorrow night. If still no joy, the compressed air is a great next step! KISS - keep it simple stupid!!
