Ignition ?

I have a 77 F100 with a breakerless ignition that has the snap on dizzie cap. I have found a replacement motor out of a 78 but the motor is not original (doesn't have any EGR systemmy 77 motor does) and the dizzie cap screws on. I am not sure which ignition system I should use to get the best driveablity out of the motor. Will my 77 setup not perform as well as the setup on the repalcement motor. Should I change the dizzie out on the replacement motor or leave it on and change the control box instead. I not sure how well the system interchanges with each other.

Do a search of the boards here [all forums], and you'll find several threads on converting over older ignition systems. It would be fairly easy to switch everything out to an 80's style Duraspark II system, which is quite reliable. There are also tons of donor vehicles available with all the parts you'd need [distributor, ignition module, coil]. Get the wiring harness and all and you'll only have to splice in 2 or 3 wires to your truck's current wiring.

Myself, having done it with a 79 F150, would put in a nice distributor, say MSD billet, and an MSD 6a or offroad. You will have less to service on the distributor side and in 8 years of selling MSD I have only seen two boxes go bad. MSD repaired them no questions asked.
I moved away from duraspark after my first unit oozed. It was a smiple mod, I connected the box to the battery, pluged it into the dist. and then to an accel supercoil. It took me longer to remove the dura spark junk than it did to replace it with the MSD parts.

Thanks for the replies. I not looking to upgrade just yet, but might in the future. Thats why I posted the ? I was not sure if the different ignition sytems were compatable with each other. I didn't know if I could mix the 2 together and it still run right. The replacement motor has a standard 1 bbl carb and no egr system and I was wonder if I should just use the ignition system out of it.

intersting you talk about the MSD boxes... I got a 6a the other day, brand new. Installed it. Started right up, no probs, but cruising down the road at say 40 in 4th I start getting a miss, like the motors not under a load (at least not towing or accelerating) but it still starts missing. But now twice, its like spassed out and the motor would barely run on startup, sounded like I was camming really bad, yanked off the msd, and it works fine... Im confused..

Well, my first thougts are your alt is not keep in 11volts on the battery. MSDs get funny when they are not getting atleast 12 volts. If the box tested fine, I would also look at your distributor, if you have one, and perhaps try a different coil.

biggest issue is that I never had that problem before the MSD, and not had it since I took it off. Maybe it is the alt not supplying, I have a 40 Amp electric fan, and although it rarely runs, I think it WAS running when I had my biggest issues. I might be going to a bigger alt just becuase with my heater, stereo (no sub or anything, but 4X50watt output), lights and fan on, I can tell, if I turn the fan off, my heaters fan blows harder...
