exaust question

After getting tired of hearing the quite 6.0 compared to my old 7.3 I got a wild hair and decided to stop by the muffler shop on the way home one day and have them remove my muffler and replace it with a piece of straight pipe. I know that the expensive exausts are much better but I just wanted some cheap sound since I am not running a chip yet and don't need a 4". After inspecting the pipe that replaced my muffler I noticed it was smaller than the stock 3.5" pipe. When I asked the guy that did it, he said that no exaust shop in town had 3.5" pipe so he put a piece of 3" in it. My question is, does 3" straight pipe in place of the muffler meet/exceed the exaust flow that I was getting out of the stock muffler with 3.5" inlet/outlet? I am paranoid that I may be running high egt's because of the restriction of the smaller pipe.

I ran mine like that for months, until I bought a muffler delete pipe from ITP Diesel. I think the 3.0 inch would flow as good, but probably better than the stock muffler. But I don't have any proof of that.
