frame prep
ok i am gethering parts for a frame up restore on a 78 supercab i will admit i dont know that much about paintting always had it done by somone else before after i get the frame cleaned and sandblasted what would be the best thing to put on it ( por 15 - primer )or both and what kind of paint or undercoatting this is going to be a drawn out rebuild so it will set awhile before the cab gos on

epoxy primer. Our local sandblaster co. charges about $100 (2001 price) to blast a frame and epoxy primer it. It ends up a dull reddish brown, but then you can apply color to it and be done.

I used rustoleum red metal primer and a brush. If you are looking for show quality, don't do this, as you can see the brush strokes. However, it holds up better then the POR15 I have put on other stuff. That stuff is a waste of $$$

I just had a frame from a 78 F250 CrewCab 4X4 sandblasted (doing a body off resto) and have now sprayed the frame, axles, misc parts with RustBullet. I love this material! Just sprayed it on with an HVLP gun. Then I applied Chassis Black from NAPA over the RustBullet because the RustBullet is silver in color. RustBullet is a hard armor like finish that kills existing rust and will not let the metal ever rust again. It is so hard that I'm concerned about how the Chassis Black paint is adhereing to the RustBullet.

I have talked to a local paint rep that does street rods on the side. I asked him what to put on a frame before and he said they use Imron Chassi black. Imron is DuPonts industrial line of paint and is very strong. If you are having your frame sandblasted epoxy primer is the best for that. I cant remember how much the Imron cost but i think it was less than 100 buck for a sprayable gallon and that would be more than enough for a frame.
