Just wondering what type of mileage people get out of a 4.9l and what to expect, also any tips on getting better mileage?

if you get 15 mpg in the city you are lucky.

 

I was getting 13 Mph on the highway after my rebuild. Put new carb on it brought it up to 15. Found my problem was the intake had 2 cracks in the body and caused a bad vacuum leak. After finding a replacement from a wreck. I now get 22mph on the highway. That is on long trips. The short trips of commuting suck with todays prices. The motor just gets to good operating temp and you shut it down. So it loses the advantage of mileage. I have more work I want to do on my motor yet.

 

66gpw.....yours is an excellent example of what the potential of the 300 is. If owners are getting poor mileage there's a reason. They need to find out what the problem is and correct it. At $3 gas prices it pays to get her runnin good.

i have an 89 f150 and my 300 I6 gets about 15-16 usually and about 20-22 on long trips, the truck also has little over 255,000 miles

 

Mine is rebuilt and now has 20,000 km on the rebuild. It is nicely broken in now. I still have a valve to adjust yet that causes a miss. I still got some suspension issues to fix. The front springs are weak causing the front to be lower. That causes more air to be pushed.

 

My '86 F-250 4WD with older non-feedback carb and DS2 ignition conversion got 18 MPG on its long trip down to our summer home. I was happy, seeing it is pretty tired (200-300K+ miles) and it sits up really high.

 

I was just given an 1980 f100 ranger with over 320,000 miles on an unrebuilt engine and trainy and it still runs likes it was new(Belonged to a friend of my dads). I got about 21 mpg driving home from Tampa which is about 2 Hrs away doing about 55-60. Nobody can beat an old Ford engine, they just never die.

 

i get 16.25....just figured it today. All i have done is instill a 302 TB and autolite platinum plugs. 31" tires. Other then that its all stock. Combo of highway and street driving. i run 70-75 on the highway. I'll be takin a long trip in september so i'll get to see what she gets with nothing but highway driving.

 

My 96 2wd 4.9 gets atleast 14 in the city and atleast 18 on the highway. Exactly what the window sticker said! I've gotten almost 20 highway before as well.

 

I have a 1991 f150 w/300 5 speed w/ 8 inch custom rims(little meat on the road) no 2nd cat and a homemade straight piped dual exhaust and i get 18 in town. my goal is 20 in town

 

The best I've ever seen out of the van is 15.5 Hwy and empty, not running the A/C. It is after all a 6200 lb brick. Average around town is about 14.5, deduct 1mpg for A/C use [old power sucking York type compressor]. Start towing 4000 lb and it's more like 11-12mpg.

 

Wow Racer. 18 in town is pretty good! It must be your 5 speed. I don't think my E4OD could pull that off.

 

i get about 14-14.5 average i think, but most of my driving is short distance around 14km to work i think, that and i generaly shift at 2800-3000 rpm i do not use 5th gear on mine
