Engine swap (Help)

Hi All I have a 1983 Flair side and it overheated due to a stuck thermostat so I got a rebuilt 1978 302 after I put the motor in I noticed that the bottom pulley was smaller than the original I compared the two flywheels before I installed the engine they seemed to be the same but the harmonic balancers are different. Can anyone set me straight on this
Thank You Chuck

Somewhere in the early 80s Ford changed the balance on the 302 (I think around 82, but it may be a year or 2 earlier or later). You have to use the correct harmonic balancer and flywheel/flexplate for the crank, otherwise you will have a nasty vibration and will shorten the life of the engine. As long as you've kept the balancer and flywheel with the correct engine, you'll be OK, but don't mix them up. If your problem is the drive pulley on the balancer, they can be swapped without affecting the balance, to keep your belt lengths the same.

Thanks for the heads up on that one Bob When I matched the 78 to the 83 flex plate they seemed to be identical same tooth count and the weight seemed to be the same size so I installed the one off the 83 due to some tooth wear on the 78 I would think that If there is a 22 oz difference in the weight it would have been much larger? yes, no, maybe so? This ford has really got me scratchin my brain
