4r44e speed sensor problem

I replaced a 4r44e on my 97 mazda b-2300 4X2 automatic trans with another 4r44e. However, the new one's extension housing has no hole for the output speed sensor (OSS). So I thought I can use the extension housing from the old to the new. When I removed the extension housing on the new 4r44e, I found the output shaft has no matching gears for the OSS to work (if I swap the old extension housing to new trans). Do I have to drop the new trans so that I can swap both the extension housing and the output shaft of the old trans to the new trans? Is there any alternative ways to deal with the OSS because my truck now does not shift to 2nd gear? Thanks in advance

I think you need to get another transmission. To replace the output shaft you need to tear both transmissions all the way down. If you do that, you might as well overhaul the one that came out because it is at least calibrated to your processor.

The gear itself for the speed sensor should be removable and you can transfer it to your new tranny with the cover with the hole.

Question similar vss problem

I have a '95 Ranger (3.0L V6 auto) -- and I just replaced the transmission and I have the same problem -- the new transmission I installed does not have the gear or the access port for the vss -- the new trans was for a later model ('99) and apparently the later models only used the vss signal from the rear end. What I am wondering is whether I can tap into the signal from the sensor on the top of the differential (part of the RABS) and feed that to the speedometer to get the electronic transmission to work properly (?)
Otherwise I figure that I will have to somehow configure an external vss...

Not that I know of. Plausible? Perhaps. However, the signals may not line up. I.e., the reference range for the speedo signal could be 0-5 volts, whereas the VSS could be 0-3 volts (made up numbers). Therefore, for obvious reasons, it wouldn't work.

On the other hand, if it did work, and the output voltages or resistances lined up, the only thing other that would bother me would be the signal to the PCM (which uses the signal from the VSS to control many things, just read some of the threads about the VSS failing!). If the signal was divided amongst the PCM and speedo, you could possibly get an erroneous signal to the PCM, which could result in early/late/hard/no shifts, the failure of the RABS system, amongst other things.

As for an external VSS, yes a possibility, but you'll need to configure for where you will put it, gearing of a plate or disc or the like to run the gears in the VSS, gearing of your transmission and rear end, tire size, etc.

Perhaps, if the transmission is still new, you can exchange it for one with a VSS hole?

1997 Ranger 3.0 4r44e tranny. Trying to put in a 1999 ranger 4r44e. No hole in the rear tailshaft fir speedometer. I don't care about a speedometer. Will the tranny work without this without problems?
