4x4 problems?

I have a 2000 excursion 4x4 v10 limited. Lifted, 36" tires... all the good stuff. Anyways i am having issues with puting it im 4x4 while im moving. If i do it makes this grinding noise and it hops in and out of 4x4 or thats what the light shows anyways. If i put it in 4x4 from a stop everything works perfect! Any help would be much apprecaited! Thanks! -Dan

You are not suppost to engage it while you are driving, You will actually do more harm than good. It doesnt let the solienod engage properly and will break it or make it so it doesnt work anymore. You are suppost to engage it while at astop with your foot on the brake and you will hear it engage.

We have the same X, with the same engine, stock suspension and tires though. My owners manual states that I can shift into 4 high at any speed up to I think 45 MPH? You'll need to stop, keep your foot on the brake, and shift the trans to neutral to get into 4 low though.

Are your hubs in either the lock or auto position? I mean, they're not in between somewhere are they?
