Cool Hub replacement

I just posted in here the other day about a lot of vibration and noise coming from my front right side of my axle. Well upon inspection i reviealed that the axle is moving around inside the hub quite a lot. I've got a feeling that it has eaten through the bearing and might be eating into the hub itself. I'm not sure yet, going to tear it apart on saterday. If i do find the worst(hopefully not) does anybody know the prices of the hub and maybe a part #.

Has anybody else had this problem. And what causes that bearing to go out, I hardly ever use the 4x4. Just some questions.

Sorry, dude, it is all bad news from here on.

Bearing/hub is an integral unit. I think I got mine from NAPA at just under $300ea. Sucks. Hopefuly you did not damage the spindle. Don't know what that will cost, I was lucky.

Don't know that part number.

And I don't think frequency of 4x4 use has anything to do with it. That assembly has to carry the wieght and spin regardless. And those big tires you got don't make that job any easier!

yup, good ole unit bearing hubs! buddy of mine just replaced both sides after only running 38" tires for a few months. there is a vendor you can get ahold of that sells replacement hubs that will allow you to use standard bearings. yea its expensive now but you wont be replacing those hubs ever again and proll ynot the bearings unless you get dirt and grit in there.

gungho351, I had the same thing happen to me. You probably don't have a bad hub assembly. I expect that you will find the needle bearing that runs on the spindle has gone bad and undercut the axle. The bearing is replacable and cheap. The axle however is not. I took mine out and had it built back up with weld and turned (I have a machine shop at my disposal) and just replaced the bearings. 50,000 miles later, everything is still fine. If you need to purchase the axle, Ford will tell you that you have to purchase the entire axle, shaft, u-joint and spindle. Look up the part number for the spindle for an F550 and it will show the parts independently and they are the same parts, just broken out differently.

Thanks for the advise. I think that I am going to try to go with that standard bearing conversion that FISHMANN was talking about.

The only thing that i am confused about is I had the same problem with the other side, But the axle itself was fine and so was the bearing, there was hardly any play in the bearing at all. After I did the ball Joints on the drivers side I noticed that there was no movement. All I did was repack the bearing with grease put it all back together and all was good. I was hoping that I would have the same luck when I do the passenger side this weekend. So wish me Luck.
