Trans question

Hi All.....I have an 86 F-350 CrewCab Dually 2wd with a 460/Automatic.

My question is this is a 3 speed auto, can I have this rebuilt to a 4sp or overdrive or would I have to find a completly different trans? Right now when I am running about 65mph, I am also turning 3000rpm's and would like to lower that down a bit and hopefully get better mileage.

Any ideas.

Thanks

I'm no expert, but I'd start by checking the gear ratio of the rear axle. You can check the code listed on the drivers door jam on the Ford Axle Code Chart listed under Articles/ Decoder o this site - Very Handy!

ok, here it is.....the axle code on the door says 45, and the trans says K.

I am not sure what these stand for but thats what the tag on the drivers door says.

I forgot to ask also......would I be better off switching to a 5sp manual instead of staying with an automatic?

1980 to 1986 codes.
Tranny door code K = C6 3-SPEED AUTOMATIC

Conventional Axle code:
F-150/250/350 non Limited Slip:
Code...........Man...Size...GVW..Gear Ratio
45.............Ford............7400........4.10
I have a list of gear with ratios for the c4/c6 transmisson buy each gear, if you want them.
There is a lot of rework to be done adding a manual to replace a automatic. Changing out the clutch/brake peddal and depending on if your putting in a manual or Hydraulic clutch. Manual you will need all the linkage mounts, boot assembly and pedal assembly from the donnor. Hydraulic you will need a clutch booster and slave cylinder

To get the rpm down you can change the rear gears to say a 3.55, install a larger dia. tire or install a gear vendors OD unit. Then you have the option of the 5-speed which you asked about.

If you use the truck to haul or tow I would suggest looking into the 5-speed swap. Even if you went with the E40D auto for the 460 it would cost a fortune to rebuild and they are not the strongest tranny to be using in a heavy truck plus it would need a computer to control the shift points. A facotry computer plus wiring or there is an after market device that will solve the computer problem.

Dungeon_master.

I have an 84 F-150 with a 300 6cyl and a 4sp manual. I can scavenge the pedal assembly out of that I think. It is a manual linkage, I don't know if I would need other peices for a different trans or not. I do some towing with this truck, not alot but enough.

BTW. I had thought about completly swapping out the 460 and putting the 300 straight six in it with the 4sp but the ford dealer up here told me that engine was never in this size truck. He kind of hinted that it would not have enough power. I personally always liked the 300 because its a tourqy and very realiable motor, in my opinion.

He was right 4.9 didn't come in a 86 F-350 heres the list I have engine verses application. It would tow but would be a dog.
1986.......Vin code E..........300 Cid 4.9L..........F-100 F-150 F-250
1986.......Vin code N..........302 Cid 5.0L……..F-100 F-150 F-250
1986.......Vin code G..........351W Cid 5.8L…...F-150 F-250
1986.......Vin code H..........351W Cid 5.8L…...F-150 F-250
1986.......Vin code 1...........420 Cid 6.9L……...F-250
1986.......Vin code L..........460 Cid 7.5L….......F-250
I know a ZF 5 speed tranny would bolt up. You would be able to tow, Down side is it has a granny gear.

Seeing you have a pretty big truck changing the rear axle gears may hurt you more than help you unless 90% of your driving is on the highway but then towing mileage would go to crap and cause the motor to work harder.

I would look at the ZF 5-speed swap or the gear vendors rear mounted gear splitter.
