Engine Knock

Help! I have a 68 f250 camper special with a 360 and I don't think I have any oil pressure. The gage I was told is broken, any way to test it. Is there any trick to see if the pump is working. I took off the valve covers and all looked ok, started the motor and expected an eruption of oil, none came through. Last time I did this on a 352 I spilled about a quart. Also the motor has a lower end knock. Was told it was rebuild about 20k miles ago and have some records that show that. I suspect bad bearings or bad pump or both but would like to trouble shoot some more without tearing the motor completely apart.

Thanks in advance,
Neil

I would check the oil pump drive shaft by removing the distributor. If it ain't broke, then it should still be visible where the distributor drives it. If it did break, then the top half is probably laying in the pan somewhere. It may also be possible that the suction screen fell off the pump; again, laying in the pan. The pumps themselves are fairly bullet-proof. Try cranking the engine with the oil filter off. If you made one hell of a mess, then your pump is still working, assuming you have oil in the pan of course.

I would definetly get a mechanincal gauge if you suspect low oil pressure. To see if it is true and also so you dont drive around with no oil pressure when you dont know it.

My opinion, you just have a wrist pin knocking. Its very common on FE motors and is not terminal. If you truely have no oil pressure, you should hear much more than just a knock. To be safe, though, install a mechanical gauge and sender.
