Check Engin Code Help

Hello All

I have searched the forums quite a bit and connot come to a definitive answer. I appreciate any help you can offer. I have a '99 Ranger 2WD 4.0L V6 Automatic Transmission with 86,000 miles. Using a scan tool to read the CEL, I am getting code P0171 (bank 1 lean right?).

I have noticed that the engine starts normally, but will stumble briefly after the engine has been running for 30 seconds or so. The stumbling only lasts for another 5-10 seconds before the idle smooths back out. The other symptom I have noticed is that the truck wants to idle somewhat faster than normal when the engine is cold (1200-1500 rpm). The engine will not stumble at startup and idles normally (~800 rpm) when the engine is at operating temperature.

I have cleaned the MAF and checked the PCV valve. If only one of the lean codes is showing up, will that put the upper intake in question? What about sparkplugs? I replaced mine about 10K ago with Bosch Platinums- should I have went with Motorcraft OEM?

If anyone can shed some light on this I would appreciate it a lot. I don't want to start throwing parts at a vehicle.

Pull the spark plugs on that cylinder bank and read them.

My guess, with what I read about the OHV 4.0L, is that the intake mani gasket could be at fault or at least the bolt need to be retorqued.

Hopefully, that's all it is and glad you aren't tossing money at parts....
