Shop Heating

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Oct-02 AT 11:31 AM (EST)]

I started to build my heating system about a month ago and I thought I might ask some oppinions.

I started with an oil fired hotwater heater and ran 1in copper return line through a 2 horse pump to a 2 core F150 rad that I put in a 4x3x2.5 sheetmetal cabnet with a box fan drawing intake air from the shop through the rad. Air thats already heated. As the only fumes will be from the hotwater tank which will be vented outside.
I going to be using a thermostat to control the pump and fan on off.
I should have it all finished by the end of the month.

I've always thought all that hot water sitting in the tank is wasted energy

If this works I'll have lots of hot water and be warm and toasty
and I'll be putting one in my house too.

Any opinions would be appriciated.

I assume you are not going to use the hot water from that tank for drinking or dishes etc?
Now if you would put a conversion buner on that heater and run it on gas your really cooking.

There is another thread here with more ideas and options for shop heating. You have to keep your shop warm or the beer fridge isn't needed...

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Oct-02 AT 02:05 PM (EST)] No gas available!! Guess I could go with propane but I don't think I'll be going through to much oil drawing preheated air through the rad and insulating the tank and lines real well. Also counting on good insulation and sealing the shop/barn off real well. Ive extended
the man door to 4ft to accomidate our snowmobiles. That will cut down on the opening of the big slider.

I actually have collected Kitchen counters and fridge, stove, sink, showerstall for the loft I don't see a problem with using the water for dishes and washing as long as the rad is flushed real well before I slap it all together.

You might want to test for lead.

Good luck

You can also use external combustion air for the water heater to cut down or drafts. An old 55Gal barrel stove with external comb air could be used for supplemental heat. You could also rig a used oil drip burner in that.

Do a search here in this forum and you will find info on waste oil heating and some more references. There are major problems with running used oil thru a regular oil burner.

How's the project coming along Nutter I'm interested in alternate shop heating. I'm heating my main shop 30x30 with Gas but I set up an 18x24 pole barn on one side. When I pour floor I plan on putTing hose thru it for Radiant heating I can easily run it thru a radiator. and blow air thru it. Any pictures???

I hope your not using hose, you mean the special tubing designed for this Right!
radiant heat in a concrete floor is great,If i lived in the provinces.
I live in new york ,we don't get that cold.
One other suggestion would be to use a Glycol or antifreeze system in your radiant floor heat if for some reason you didn't want to heat it
all the time!

Yes I will be using the proper piping for the floor I have a few differant choices as they have improved it so much in the last few years. I was planning on using a 3/4 PVC heavy wall pipe. One of the other post's on the same subject has the techinical name for the new and approved stuff. It is a very thin hose which I always believe "Bigger is Better " But everyone I have talked to about Radient heating in the floor love it. Yes I will also be planning a anti-freeze in the hose as I'd hate to risk only water after all the work to set up. Thanks for your concern

I'm still gathering info on the expansion tank situation and air release valve. These are 2 problems I overlooked till a buddy of mine mentioned them to me.

One problem with radiant heat is has a slow response time. When you are looking for a quick warmup to do a few hours work in the evening some sort of forced air system is best. A good hot water tank for washing hands and parts can provide a lot of hot air when pumped thru a radiator with a fan. You can also use the radiator-fan combo for a little summer cool.

Thanks for using FTE!

Comment to nutter: 2HP pump is way overkill, use 1/8 or 1/4 HP max.

Fans flow better with an unrestricted intake so use the fan to blow air thru the radiator rather than suck it thru.

Interesting link, lots of info.

Thanks for using FTE!
