Simple A/C question....

The freon ahould be recovered by an A/C shop but they'll charge to do that so...

Freon is very bad for the eyes; if it gets on your eye and then evaporates, it freezes the eye causing permanent vison problems. Eye protection is highly recommended!

After getting a pair of wrenches positioned so I could loosen the A/C lines, I would throw a heavy rag over the connection so the escaping freon (if any) won't hit me in the face. Once the freon has escaped there is no problem in disassembling and removing the A/C system.

The heater is another story. If you drive your truck on the street don't take it out. Even if you don't want the heater you really need the windshield defroster. My brother took his out in California and discovered that even in San Diego it gets cold enough that he had trouble seeing on cold winter days. And we've all heard about the frost warnings in south Florida concerning the Orange crop so I don't know any place were I would take it out.

But if its a off road, nice-days-only truck, just cut the hoses and plug the ends or remove the connectors for the heater hoses on the engine and install plugs. Then remove as little or as much of the heater ducts, controls, etc, as you want.

Simple A/C question....

There should be a shrader valve( likes like a tire valve ) simply depress the pin in it and it will release whatever little bit of freon is left. your hand might get cold but it won't harm you just don't do it around a open flame it causes a hazardous gas when mixed with fire. If you do remove it and it's off a 351M I may be interested in buying the compressor brackets.

Simple A/C question....

You do realize that if he is blowing off liquid freon he could get a nasty case of frost bite?..Don't let anyone catch you doing this or you will find out it would have been much cheaper to pay a company to reclaim the freon..LOL...

Simple A/C question....

Freon 12 and other gases released into the atmosphere contribute to the destruction of the Ozone layer and impacts global warming.Hence it is a crime to vent it off! When I vented Freon off in my earlier days,I usually did it with a recharging hose and valve and vented very slowly over a period of time in order to avoid the hazard of liquid Freon burns. Another thing you all should be aware of is that using an Acyteline torch on Freon lines produces Phosgene gas which is deadly! Now,back to the original question- If your system only blows hot air,the chances are that it is empty of Freon anyway, due to a leak in the system. If you do remove your system from your truck, use goggles and gloves when you break the lines and remove the unit. Make sure that there is no pressure bleeding off when you remove it.
