302-351 Aod Help
#31
the proper flexplate would be from an 80's crownvic running 351w/aod. see they never put the aod/5.8 combo in a truck or bronco. thats why its so hard to find the proper flexplate. also the reason you cant use the 302 flexplate is because of the weight imbalance which i think you already know but just want to make sure. 351w's 28oz imbalance. 302 past 82 50oz imbalance.
the flexplate will only line up one way as well.

this is probably a stupid question since engines are generally the same, but is it alright that i run the 80's crown vic flexplate on that 94 engine?? i'll bet its the same, but just want to be sure, dont want to do more damage than has already been done. anyways, thanks again to everyone for all your help, i'll keep you posted.....that way it doesn't drive handyman nuts anymore

took the valve body apart today, everything looked fine, all the springs were in good condition, everything opened and closed just fine. also, took off the transfer case and tailshaft to get at the governor valve, clean as a bell, no clogs, or deposits that would keep it from malfunctioning, moved it around, it moved fine. took it back out on the road, still the same problem....... im losing my mind over this thing, so i'm going to take the trans out and take it to a tranny shop tomorrow, hopefully they'll be able to find the problem.
Since everything else has checked out, it has to be a failed oil pump, caused by guess what, not getting the TC in all the way(caused by using the wrong flexplate). Tranny guy said to check this, take off one of the cooler lines, then start it up, and about 40-60 pounds of pressure should make that stuff fly out of there....does that sound right?....there was no 40-60 pounds of pressure. It was like pouring water from one glass to the other, thats about how much pressure there was, so it's got to be the oil pump. Anyways, i'll take it in tomorrow and let everyone know what the problem turned out to be. Thanks again to everyone for the help.

yeah, but on an AOD, it actually clicks 3 times, as there are three gear shafts inside where the Torque converter slides onto. There is a main shaft, and then a smaller one inside that, and a smaller shaft inside that. All the shafts looked fine, no broken or bent splines, and no shavings in the bellhousing. and yeah EPN, all automatic trannys do this, because the TC has to fit on it's shaft, then the oil pump shaft that the stator turns, then the other shaft that the impeller turns. anyways, took it to the tranny guy today, and he looked at the TV pressure valve and thought that was fine, then wiggled the governor valve and said that it was awful loose, and that that might have been the problem. won't know until tomorrow for sure though.

got it back from the shop today. apparently, it just all failed at the same time i did this swap. mechanic said that the governor sits on the shaft with a ball-bearing system and a snap ring, and the ball bearings had frozen up, not letting it open and shut, and, the throttle pressure valve had a problem as well. apparently, inside the valve body, the spring had broken and fallen off of it's rest. so he swapped out the TPV spring, cleaned the governor, installed new bearings, and i'll put it in tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

ok everyone, here's the scoop. it still doesnt work.....engages fine still, goes into D and R ok. driving it, throttle up to 25-30, let off throttle, trans shifts to 2nd. put throttle back into it, trans downshifts and keeps going, RPMs racing, this has got to be the TV cable isnt it? or is it possible that the clutch band is so wore that it can't hold the gear? anyways, figured i'd let everyone know what's going on and hope someone can shoot me another idea.

Just got mine rebuilt, it was slipping in several gears. Transmission man said a band broke in mine and was bouncing around. Works great now. I know you guys already determined this, but it has no vacuum lines, the tube on the top is a vent tube, all TV controlled. You said that you thought it shifted out of 1st because it breaked when you pulled it into 1st. That is not necessarily right. The AOD has both forward and rvs clutches engaged in manual (1st) but if you put it in D or OD, it only engages the forward clutches, ergo, when you let off the throttle, it doesn't break (freewheels), but in manual (1st) it does. So for whatever reason, it is never shifting out of 1st. Sounds like a clogged port or something in the Valve Body. I don't think the TV cable can be out of adjustment enough to cause it not to shift at all. If you haven't already, pulling the pan and checking the valve body will be the best bet.

you know, if I can't find this out, I want to swap in a ZF 5spd, and be done with all the problems i've had with automatics. I was wondering if anyone had converted an automatic to a manual, and how well it worked. I figure since the trans isn't comp. controlled, it should be just an issue of cutting a hole in the floor for the shifter, the firewall for the clutch, and putting all the clutch stuff in there. but i know that manual trannys are generally a lot shorter than autos, so I'll probably need driveshaft adjustments. this sound right to anyone? thanks again to everyone for all the help.
