tail gate question

i am contemplating restoring the tail gate. It has its usual dings and dents, but it is also bowed a bit from a shifted load. Has anyone tried the after market ones? I can get them for about 90$ but they dont say "ford" on it (that really doesnt bother me), but iam concerened about the the thickness and quality of metal. I am sure it isnt as good as original, but for the price, it would save me alot of time.. thanks all...

tail gate question

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Jan-02 AT 08:49 PM (EST)]I've had my tailgate for about 2 years now, its not the big bulky stock but i havent had any problums with it yet, and so far i have hit a goose neck on it. no problum though the dent came right out and just re painted it.

If your talking about a 79 tailgate, i've seen them for 70 dollars new and primered

tail gate question

I had one on my '79 and did not have good luck with it. It was very thin guage metal, bowed easily, some of the spot welds separated. The quality may vary with suppliers, I don't know. I have a pretty nice OEM one in my shed if you're interested. Don't know what part of the country you're in.

tail gate question

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Jan-02 AT 01:24 PM (EST)]I've got one of those hundred buck tailgates. I'm not impressed. I would rather restore a stock unit. I bought the truck with the new tailgate already installed. It is thin gauge metal and very lite. It will require some trimming to fit just right. It will bow when you walk on it or put much weight on it. I'm about 185 and it bows. Unless you use bondo or body filler the weld spots show through the paint job. It takes one hand on the handle and another to hold the tailgate just right so she closes properly. If you've got the chance to use a solid original then go for it. I wish I could find one here in Tulsa.
