Steering Wheel Puller

Hello,

Can someone tell me what specific puller I need, to remove the steering wheel from a 2001 SD? The shop manual refers to a Ford part that I can't find online. The picture looks like a bearing puller. I bought a universal kit with bars and screws, but I'm not sure it will work.

I'm replacing my wheel and want to have the proper tool prior to pulling the airbag.

Thanks,

Joe

Hey valvestud: I did this just last month (wanted a new nicer looking steering wheel to replace my old warn leather one). I just borrowed a puller from my local Autozone (didn't even buy anything on that trip) and the wheel popped right out. Just be carefull which puller they give you - they first tried to give me a rather large one that looked good to me, but when I got outside to my truck, I was smart enough to bring the new replacement wheel with me and practiced in the truck to learn that it wouldn't fit. Went back inside and got a different puller. Also, I don't think they had it listed as a steering wheel puller - the second smaller one I got was listed just as a small gear puller.

I took it home and it worked great - super easy job too. I was a bit nervous, but it doesn't get any easier. I have some photos if you want them - just let me know and I'll load them up.

Good luck!

Just a head's up. Unhook the negative battery cable and leave it off when doing the steering wheel removal. Wait 15 minutes after disconnecting it then start on your project. That way the air bag won't go off in your face.

Ditto on what Beast said. Alot of people told me I wouldn't need to diconnect the batteries (two in my diesel) but I did it anyway to be safe. And I was STILL nervous when removing the airbag.

Let me know if you want the photo from my steering wheel replacement, I will post them in my gallery.

Good luck!

BTW, what wheel did you go with?

Miescha,

I'm a little nervous about it, but I'll disconnect the battery first. I'm just replacing with with the stock wheel.

Thanks again for your help!
