2000+explorers

Looking to buy in the near future, maybe a 2002 explorer 4x4 lease return or something.Wondering what's the best engine to go with etc.Maybe what I should avoid. Also what kind of mpg you should expect.

Had a new '98 F-150 4x4 regular cab short box but had the 4.2L which was too busy, should have got a bigger motor, love the truck, though I don't need one anymore.

Reading this forum I've seen where 4X4's are just more trouble and expense.
My 2000 is a SOHC 4.0 4X2, plenty enough power for me....averaging 20 mpg with about 3/4 highway.

Any 5.0L v8 or even the 4.6L Exploder if not a first year run will be the only choice for you, in my opinion, as low as it is of most Ford v6s....like the 4.0L SOHC.

I have heard upwards of or even over 20mpg's on the highway with the v8 as well. As good as the heads on either v8 flow, I can believe those numbers.

I agree that the 4x4 feature brings with it additional maintenance. But, when it comes to resale value the 4x4 is a big plus.

I believe the epa.gov website show the mileage numbers published....you could actually see how it varies between engines and by adding 4 X 4.
