OBD2 code scan questions.
ok,here is the question. does the check engine light have to be on for a sensor to be bad? A friend's 1999 cavalier is having a problem starting sometimes when the engine is at operating temperature. will a code scanner pick up a code if the check engine light isn't on? I am thinking coolant temperature sensor,but I don't want to throw a lot of parts at it and not find the problem. thanks for any ideas,Ben

It might show up in the "pending trouble codes" section. I think most scanners can display trouble codes that have turned on the check engine light as well as pending trouble codes that have not yet reached the threshold of turning on the CEL.
