75 ford

i have a 75 ford f150 with a 360 or y vin code i got the truck from my grandpa after he died he always said it was a 390 but i know he and my uncle rebuilt it once so is there any way to look at the engine like with the oil pan off to tell if it is a 390 now also will all the parts for a 390 fit on a 360 cause that is what i have been told if any one can help i would appreciate it very much also does anyone know where to get gear drive timing sets for that engine

You can remove the number one plug and set the harmonic balancer to Top Dead Center (zero degrees or TDC). Then rotate the harmonic balancer 180 degrees and Then measure the distance the piston moves from when the harmonic balancer is at TDC to a rotation of 180 degrees.

A 352 FE or 360 cid will have a crankshaft stroke of 3.50"
and a 390 FE cid will have a crankshaft stroke of 3.78"

measuring the stroke is the best way to go about it.

or with the pan off. look on the crank counter balance there will be a number 2t or 2ta is a 360.

Or tell us what the stamped number is and we can tell you what crank is there... Yes, the 360/390 parts all interchange, in fact, most parts for and FE engine will interchange (exceptions being parts from the biggest CID FE). There are gear drive sets available, but for these motors really aren't worth the $$, go with a good double roller set and be done with it.
