Just finished putting the new rocker shafts on and adjusting the valve clearance per Steve Christs book page 140 and 141. Pulled the dizzy to turn the oil pump and make sure they oiled right. They do so I put the dizzy back in and it wont align perfectly as before. I,m using the dizzy off my 352 because its in good shape and already has the Pertronixs in it. I know #1 is TDC at 0 deg on the mark after the intake valve is closed and #1 piston comes up so its on the compression stroke. With the 352 dizzy in, the rotor is pointing at the intake valve rocker on #1 and not the post or dead center like it was. With the old 390 dizzy in it points at the exhaust valve rocker and not the post like it should be. Help!!! Which is correct?
just because the dizzy is at tdc and your piston is up means nothing. you can also be on the exhaust stroke. you need to finf tdc on the compression stroke. and it does not matter which socket on the cap you pick as number 1 just find one and start form there.
gashogs right.. make dang sure you're on compression or you'll fight it for a bit... not that I'D ever do anything like that.. Yeah right, how else would i know!! :-P
As for the dizzy position: You should be able to select from many spots on the gear. You want the spot that lets you adjust the dizzy more counter clockwise than clockwise. Seeing as you'll start at 0 BTDC and eventually adjust to 10 or more BTDC. In any case, it doesn't need to be dead on number wire at TDC. You'll be adjusting when you fire it up (have a buddy handy for this to adjust the dizzy whil you hit the starter).
being that the dizzy rotates counterclockwise wouldn't you want more room to turn it clockwise not counter clockwise. if standing in fornt of the engine and you turn it to the right you retard it turn it to the left and you advance it. so wouldn't you need more room to go clockwise?
brain fart, it is clockwise to advance the timing. I even visualized it correctlly then just misnamed it. But, that makes sense, you want to go opposite the rotor which does spin CCW so your gaining on it (advancing).
To me it is worth the trouble to keep the wires in order and neat for the sake of not creating another problem just to save time today. I have seen the wires get pinched rubbed through and even burned on exhaust manifolds from this quick fix stated above.

Gas hog I am at TDC the first time #1 comes around after the #1 intake valve closes. That is the compression stroke Right?
Yep, that's it. As soon as the intake valve starts to close watch the damper, stop at "0" and you are there.
The only thing I haven't seen mentioned is that the oil pump drive may not line up well enough to engage the pump. You can pull the dizzy and turn the pump, or push down on the dizzy and turn the crank 'till it drops all the way in.
