Fellas i have just finished up my rebuild on my 390 with the next higher bump stick and was wondering on what you guys prefer for the best muffler for that deep throaty meaty sound I am looking for. I have heard a chev 350 with typical flow masters on it amd I am really not that impressed. Any help here, Thanks dj
well ive got 2 chamber flowmasters on my 69 w/390 and it sounds pretty good but for my current project (64 falcon w/351w, 5spd.) im prolly going to get magnaflows. they sound really good. i think greg (gtex) is still running magnaflows on his rig.
I have headers on a 390 I just finished.....I put summit 18" turbos on it no balance tube about 3' of pipe that's it....that was just to get me to the ex shop......It was way loud (expected) but since I'm going to have turn downs at the axle I felt it was going to be too loud still.....so I'm putting on dynomax hemi turbos.....25" long body......it will be ready in a few hours....I'll post and let you know how they turn'd out...
You might try the no muffler thing for a while, see how that works out.
I tried that once when I was replacing mufflers on my F100. LOUD!
I've got magnaflow's on mine now, and I'm really not all that impressed. It's a big oversized glasspack with steel inside instead of glass. If I was going to do it again, I'd probably either straight pipe it or just go get some regular cheap mufflers.
the new exahust ....2 1/2" hemi turbos.... balance tube..... turn downs at the rear axle is still loud.....I guess I have to run tail pipes because it's a lot louder than I thought it would be.....had to take it back to the ex shop because the right side came within 1/4" of the trans pan ....very unnecessarily to....so it's getting redone
I prefer the sound of Flowmaster myself. Sounds awesome when youve got a decent sized cam in.. I'm waiting on funds to build up and my bed to get finished before i have the exhaust done, w/ Dual 40 series flows, crossover, and electric exhaust cutouts.. cant wait!!!
I love the sound of Dynomax ultra-flow ovals.... i run 2.5 into them and 3" straight out the back.. nice and throaty when idling, loud when on the stupid pedal, and mellow when you're cruising... JMO
I have the original Flowmaster 40,s turned down in front of the rear axle. It didnt seem that loud with the old 352 but I bet its going to be louder when I get this new 390 in. Pics of the flowmasters in gallery
I wonder what it would sound like with straight pipes straight off the headers and turned down and out, behing the rear axle
It would sound pretty loud :-)
I must be running different magnaflow that Kurt. Mine aret he stainless steel, single in dual out variety and I'm running two of them. Mine has a unique sound that I like. But, I would not sya that these muffkers havea deep throaty sound. The basically sound like there's almost nothing in the muffler. I'm sure they flow well.
But, with the four pipes exiting in fron t of the rear tires, it really sings on the road. Sounds a bit like a train horn.
Man that sounds good. That was great Greg. Well I gotta go Take a customer to Texas Motor Speed way for a Ride in a Nascar and look at all those dang skimpy dressed woman and drink cold beer all day. I know it a tuff job but some bodies got to do it. lol
