wow, 292251 verses 192251 for 6's, and 273088 verses 173088 for 8's.. a hundred thousand #'s off, I'am trying to check my sources to see if "back when" i wrote down a 1 insted of a 2 ?? on the info i gave, also now from what i have read here 2..... sounds closer to a cut off than 1..... does.

 

There should be some more number/letters on there. I think you found the first four digits of the firewall stamping we are referencing.

16 = Paint Code = Chrome Yellow
HP = Assembly Plant = Highland Park, MI
A = Month of manufacture/Assembly = January
The next digit or two would be the build date. It's also possible (and quite likely) that there is/are one or two digist between the "HP" and the "A". I'v eonly got one other HP firewall stamping so it's tough for me to recognize a pattern with this plant. Some put the date in front of the month. Others put the date in back of the month. Depnds on the plant and when the truck was built.

Regarding the purpose of the thread - it was originally started to determine the VIN # cut off between 1949 and 1950 model years. It's morphed into quite a bit more. The answer to the original question is "it depends". Engine and assembly plant are variables in determining what the model year is for a VIN number. Ford continued the VIN #'s in 1950 where hey left off in 1949 instead of starting over again. Actually the 49 numbers were a continuation of the 1948 numbers but the first digit in the VIN was an 8 in 48 and a 9 in 49. In 1950, they kept the 9 at the beginning of the VIN.

Recirds on the trucks were lost many years agom in a fire or flood so they are not avaialbe from Ford. Tim (mtflat) learned about the firewall stampings and shared that with me. What we've done now is collected a bunch of VIN's and fiewall stampings to try and figure out what were the paint codes they used and the 1949/50 VIN # cut-off.

Apprecaite you helping. yours is a key one becuase it's and early 49. As I mentioned earlier, it's the earliest 49 we've come across and it has a fiewall stamping.

 

You might want to cruise through it and look for some photos that have been posted of both the frame rail numbers and the firewall/cowl stamping so you can see what wea re talking about. Hopefully, we will be able to provide you with your truck's birthday. It looks like it's coming up next month so be ready to buy something for it

i have wire brushed scraped etc. the firewall and parts of the cowl and no dice on any more markings as of yet .

9 = 1949/50
8R = 239 c.i.d. flathead V8
C = F1 (1/2 ton)
213116 - Vin sequence Number. Pretty safe bet this one is a 1949.

Would be great if you can locate a series of numbers stamped into the firewall or the cowl inside the engine compartment. This will give the build date, original color, and the assembly plant.

 

texan got one for you to see if you can tell me about it . a fella on another website i frequent just bought this to save it from the crusher . its cool and outside of glass all there . it appears to be a 51 but it is an f-8 dumptruck . serial / vin jna81ah51-11726, engine code 1eq-11726 , model f-8 trim 14 paint 99 . i would as well as he , know what you got about this . i tried the vin decoder it said invalid . i am trying to come up with the cash to buy it as he didnt really want it just saved it from ahorrible death . 55 f350 .ak.a kevin

 

That vin is Canadian - it is a '51 (just before the dash). that's why the vin checker drew a blank. Engine is 337 (1EQ)

I'll look it up tomorrow unless Carl beats me to it.

texan2004, Just got back from looking at 3 '50 Ford trucks. I am bidding on two of them but the third one is not for sale. I got the vin # from the titles but didn't have a chance to get the firewall stamping or the glove box data. If I win the bid on them I will add that info. This is what I found:

Just Curious - where are they??

 

They are located in Kingsbury, Texas. -----Did you go to the big Early Fords gathering this week end. I heard about it but had a family reunion this week end and couldn't go. I guess the San Antonio, Waco, and Houston area folks all get togather at one time. Should have been some nice rides there.
