302 engine use

Help. I have a chance to pick up a 302 out of a 74 Bronco. I want to install it into a 69 Mustang after I rebuild it. Will this be possible? Can you think of any problems I may run into. I just need a block to start rebuilding but was hopeing more of the parts, heads, crank, rods and accessory brackets would work. I asked a couple of Mustang forums but I guess the question is too tough for them. Ha Ha. Thanks JimP.

From: Destin/Ft. Walton Beach,
I'm not sure about the accessories brackets working for you. I went the other way, and used an old car 289 in a truck. I used different alternator brackets, but everything else worked. The 74 truck 302 is most likely close to a 70 302 truck engine I rebuilt. I tore it down, because of lower compression on 2 cylinders. Two exhaust valves were sunk into the heads about 3/6th of an inch. Come to find out, they were junk anyhow. My 70 truck 302 had HUGE combustion chambers in the heads, and the pistons had a slight dish. Much lower compression then a Mustang 302 of the same year. Maybe you would want to find a newer set of heads with hardened valve seats and better combustion chambers? A good usable pair of newer heads is cheaper to me, then bringing old heads up to modern specs.

The bronco oil pan will probably not fit your mustang. The bornco pan is a rear sump, your mustang is a front sump. You will need to change the pan, the pump pick-up, and one of the main bearing cap bolts.

The bronco pickup tube has a special stud as one of the main bearing cap bolts. You would not have to change this to a regular bolt, but I would go ahead and save the stud to put with the bronco pan, pick-up tube, and dipstick. You can sell this to a hot rodder, since they are always wanting to put a Ford in a Ford, and they like those rear sump pans.
