Engine Flush

Hey Guys,
Just thought I'd share this with you on my experience with engine flush.
My engine had sat for 14 years until I bought the car. I bent and broke push rods and it burnt oil real bad. I replaced the push rods and freed the lifters and I used engine flush thinking this may be a cure all for the oil burning ( stuck rings, noisey lifters etc.) you can understand the circumstances.
I recently rebuilt the engine, put a lot of money in it and decided to use the old rocker assembleys. Couldn't get oil to the right side, found out I'd used the wrong bolts in the number three rocker post. Still couldn't get oil to the right side. Bought new rockers and shafts. Now I get plenty of oil. Conclusion: Engine flush works, the bad thing about it is that the sludge it cut loose lodged in the right rocker arm assembley shaft.

This is a classic example of why not to use engine flushes. Often times, the junk they work loose causes more problems than just leaving it there. If you really want to safely clean your engine, use a diesel rated oil.

Jim:

Why didn't you clean then inside of the block with a pressure washer while you were rebuilding the engine? You would have pulled all the oil gallery plugs sprayed out the oil build up from there. Heck, even a car wash pressure sprayer would have worked!

71 4x4 390,
The block only needed the cylinders honed. After that, it was cleaned as you mentioned. I didn't have trouble with the block.
